When it comes to diet you need to avoid processed, chemically and genetically altered food. You need the “the closer to the ground” approach. I follow the paleo diet and love it! It allows me the meat I love to eat and all the veggies, nuts, and fruits I love as well.
And all ORGANIC!
For meats all grass fed and finished, free range, and USDA stamped. And for pork, especially bacon you want nitrite & nitrate free uncured pasture raised free range bacon. You’re probably wondering why no fish. I was eating only fresh Alaskan Halibut or Sock Eyed Salmon but noticed I wasn’t getting the energy jolt I normally get when I eat beef or chicken.
Don’t get me wrong, I love fish! Being raised in North Florida and having access to some of the best tasting fish on the planet I had my fill my entire childhood and most of my adult life. However, I did read a study (link 1, link 2, link 3) on a chemical called BMAA and its relation to Guamanian ALS where high concentrations of BMAA where found in sufferers in Guam. BMAA has been found in fish all over the world, including the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Also from what I was told by my nutritionist is fish already have natural levels of mercury in them. I felt with that and the BMAA study it was just better to rid myself of the risk.
- Green apples
- Grapes any color
- Blue or black berries
Grapes and berries are high in antioxidants and good for killing free radical cells.
- Grains / Rice
- Whole grain rice
- Bread (specifically ‘Dave’s Killer Bread)
- Pure virgin coconut
- Coconut spread / butter
- Olive Oil
- Butter (pure grass fed)
- Himalayan salt
- Fresh black pepper
- All organic seasonings
As I mentioned before I buy all of my organic products from one of three stores; Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, or Whole Foods simply because we haven’t found any others close by. As more sources come available I’ll pass them on.
What NOT to eat….
- Processed foods of any kind!! Anything from a box or can!!
Processed foods contain many of the toxins mentioned below; preservatives, pesticides, steroids, and artificial chemicals not good for the body. In small doses the FDA can approve it as safe, but what about it’s build up in your body over time? If your liver gets compromised after years of over saturation from these chemicals it starts to break down.
- Bread (processed with flour)
However, I do allow myself a high fiber bread called “Dave’s Killer Bread” and cleared by my nutritionist. Besides being a very hardy bread it doesn’t take much to satisfy my ‘bread fix’ and it tastes great!
- Soft drinks of any kind, but especially DIET drinks
The artificial sweetener Aspartame is dangerous! The government’s own toxicologist testified before Congress that aspartame can cause brain tumors and brain cancer. It also worsens or mimics the symptoms of such diseases and conditions as fibromyalgia, MS (and ALS), lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue and depression. I was also told by a doctor that Aspartame becomes formaldehyde when it’s stored or shipped over 87 decrease. I drank gallons of diet sodas for almost thirty years and I have no doubt for a minute it contributed to my illness.
Drinking coffee increases the production of hydrochloric acid and makes your body more acidic. This can interrupt the proper digestion of proteins and can lead to a wide range of health issues including bloating, gas, diverticulitis, ulcers, Crohn’s disease and even colon cancer. Increased acidity weakens the stomach lining as well as irritates the small intestine leading to irritable bowel syndrome.
Excess acidity can lead to heartburn and peristalsis, the process in the digestive tract that makes us head for the bathroom reducing the body’s ability to absorb minerals and vitamins. This is due to the way coffee affects iron absorption in your stomach and particularly your kidneys ability to retain calcium, zinc, magnesium and other important minerals. The most important mineral, magnesium, is required for proper bowel regularity.
Alcohol consumption has been linked to several forms of cancer, heart and liver disease, as well as causing the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can lead to pancreatitis and prevent proper digestion. The only alcohol I allow myself is an all organic wine sold at Sprouts and only on rare occasions. For me that’s about two or three times a year.
- Anything with MSG
- GMOs (genetically modified organism)
This includes wheat or corn. These once healthy staples are now just too far gone in today’s food market place to be considered healthy.
Stevia is a good substitute but honestly I haven’t missed any of it.
- Refined Salt (iodized)
My family and I use organic Himalayan salt and love it. The taste and nutrient output is incredible!
- Processed Meat
Remember meats today of any kind have been given feed ladened with pesticides to protect the feed from insects and steroids to make the animals bigger. Ironically it’s the insects these animals eat that adds to their naturally value.
